It is little-known that Handel was the probably the first composer (after Monteverdi) to call for a harp in the orchestra for some of his operas and oratorios. This is one of them.

Es gibt glücklicherweise viele Möglichkeiten, die Aufnahmen und Aufzeichnungen dieser phantastischen Sängerin genießen zu dürfen. Dass es trotzdem viel zu wenige sind, ist das eigentliche Drama. Zu damenhaft wird oft geschrieben, ähnlich wie bei den Aufnahmen der wunderbaren Teresa Berganza, der geradezu negativ attestiert wurde, dass ihrer Kehle Gesangstöne ähnlich der Perlenketten einer Märchenfee entstiegen. Ich persönlich empfand es eigentlich immer so, dass ihren Aufnahmen der Mimi, Violetta, Contessa, Nedda, Carmen und Madama Butterfly ein gewisser "irdischer" Unterton beigefügt war, dass ...., Phantasie!!! Die beiden Aufnahmen der Madama Butterfly sind meiner Meinung nach gleichwertig zu den allerbesten Aufnahmen zu betrachten.

A record of hers turned up in East Germany in 1966. Her sister, Winifred, brought me a fan letter to translate. I visited the sender several times in East Germany. We became lifelong friends and my hosts opened my eyes to the reality of life behind the Iron Curtain. Kathleen Ferrier inevitably networked from beyond the grave. I remember her once, aged 4, in 1953, the last year of her life.

This is a treasure every musician should hear.

I usually prefer this song at a livelier pace, but oh how beautiful is this! No other singer I know of brings as much heartfelt love for music as Kathleen Ferrier does to this performance. I feel that it expresses best what Schubert felt himself.

The great voice is still there, but I was surprised at the lack of vocal nuance and musical expression. The aria was delivered full voice throughout, without head tone or pianissimo. So, much energy expended where technique would have provided some respite. But it's a treasured Flagstad performance nonetheless.

Benjamin Britten wrote his Canticle II "Abraham and Isaac" for Ferrier, Peter Pears and himself (at the piano). The contralto and tenor complement each other superbly, as I have heard in a live performance. The often used boy alto voice pales by comparison.
